Crystal Pendulum 101: How to Use One for Dowsing, Chakra Reading & Yes/No Answers
A crystal pendulum is one of the simplest tools in crystal healing — a small weighted stone on a chain, used to answer questions, check chakra balance, or dowse for what your body or space needs. It takes minutes to learn and no prior experience.
What a pendulum actually does
Held still, a pendulum swings in tiny, almost imperceptible movements guided by micro-movements in your hand — what practitioners call the ideomotor response. Whether you read that as your subconscious mind speaking or as a channel for outside energy, the practice is the same: you're learning to notice signals you'd otherwise miss.
Choosing your first pendulum
Clear Quartz is the classic starter stone — neutral and amplifying, good for general questions. Rose Quartz suits questions about relationships and self-worth. Amethyst works well for spiritual or intuitive questions. Any faceted or teardrop-shaped stone on a chain 15–20cm long will work.
Step 1: Calibrate your yes and no
- Sit quietly, elbow resting on a table, and let the pendulum hang still.
- Ask out loud: "Show me my yes." Note the direction it settles into — usually a clockwise circle, a forward-back swing, or a diagonal line.
- Ask: "Show me my no." Note that direction too. It should be clearly different from your yes.
- Confirm with an obvious question you know the answer to ("Is today [correct day]?").
Step 2: Ask your question
Keep questions simple, specific and phrased as yes/no — "Is this crystal right for me?" rather than open-ended questions the pendulum can't answer. Hold the question in mind, stay relaxed, and let the swing happen rather than forcing it.
Using a pendulum for chakra checks
Hold the pendulum a few centimetres above each chakra point, from the base of the spine to the crown. A strong, even circular swing is generally read as an open, balanced chakra; a weak, erratic, or stopped swing suggests that centre needs attention — often addressed with a matching crystal, colour, or breathing practice.
Caring for your pendulum
Cleanse it regularly, especially after reading for other people — running it briefly under natural light, resting it on a Selenite plate, or smoke-cleansing all work. Store it separately so the chain doesn't tangle or scratch other pieces.
